Manager, Finance & Accounting
Remote - $90,000–$109,999 - Start date: January 2027, earlier preferred
Reports to: Fractional CFO
Manages: No direct reports
Location: Remote (U.S. Eastern Time preferred, Central Time possible)
Type: Full-time
Title & level: Manager or Senior Manager
Compensation: $90,000-$109,999 (depending on qualifications)
Benefits: Generous leave, health insurance, & retirement package, remote work facilitation
Start date: January 2027, earlier preferred
The Opportunity
As part of African Collaborative’s growth journey, we are bringing our finance function in-house. The Finance Team will consist of a fractional CFO - who sets financial strategy and represents AC on the highest-level financial matters - and the Finance & Accounting Manager who will own all of the organization’s day-to-day finance work. As the Finance & Accounting Manager, you will manage everything from grant disbursements to vendor invoices to the accounting backbone that keeps AC’s finances accurate and audit-ready, and you’ll ultimately be responsible for building a finance function that is centered around our mission and key stakeholders.
You will be a proactive thought partner to all AC departments – Development & Partnerships, Programs, and People & Operations – in addition to the CFO, COO and Co-CEOs. This role requires making sense of numbers, budgets and variances, and sharing insights or recommendations to help facilitate decisions that uplift the effectiveness of our work. In addition, you will build out, implement and support key financial processes, from budgeting and cashflow management to internal and funder reporting.
This role is critical to African Collaborative’s success; you’ll be responsible for moving $4M+ in grants per year to over 45 African-led organizations, and helping us develop the finance processes and systems to scale our partnerships and support more grantees each year. We make grants across 15 countries, and have 12 team members spanning the U.S. and five countries on the African continent, and we’re registered in both the U.S. and Mauritius. Two days will never look the same at AC - and that means you’re excited by complexity and an ever-changing landscape of work.
This is a hybrid role by design, with an estimated 60-70% being financial management and analysis and 30-40% being accounting & transaction management; we are looking for someone excited by this duality. As budget and transaction volume grows, we see the potential to add an accounting staff to the team allowing you to spend more time on the analysis and strategic thinking underlying our finance function.
Key Responsibilities
General Ledger & Financial Reporting
Own AC's day-to-day bookkeeping (QuickBooks Online), including accurate transaction coding and timely revenue and expense recognition. Keep AC's financial systems (QuickBooks Online, Ramp) clean, current, and audit-ready year-round. This includes regular bank reconciliations, account reconciliations, cross-checking accuracy of syncing between QuickBooks and Ramp, and ensuring supporting documentation is complete.
Understand and implement GAAP reporting requirements as they relate to AC’s work.
Review grant agreements and assess how to represent revenues across different types of grants (e.g., restricted by spend, restricted by time, unrestricted) and consult with technical experts (CFO, audit team) as needed.
Deliver a timely monthly close process, with accurate accrual-based financials and insightful management summaries.
Pull the monthly and quarterly BvA and develop insights alongside the CFO to present to AC management and the board (e.g., analysis of over and under spending in line with workplans, trends and unexpected findings, alignment of revenue with updates from the fundraising team).
Optimize and align budget and accounting coding to support all financial and reporting processes.
Lead AC’s annual audit and 990/tax filings - serve as primary contact to the audit team, scheduling relevant calls, gathering documentation, taking responsibility for all requests, and responding to auditor questions.
Serve as the team's day-to-day point person for all financial operations and systems questions.
Budgeting
Partner with COO and CFO to develop a comprehensive budgeting process.
Own execution of key steps of the annual budgeting process, including template creation, supporting teams to draft department budgets in line with annual goals and building on previous period learnings, facilitating a conversation with team leads to build a holistic organizational budget, and compiling the budget for executive review and decision making.
Support budget owners to manage their budgets throughout the year, by sharing variance information and forecasts proactively and partnering to prioritize and adjust, to ensure optimal spending towards goals.
Partner with the Co-CEOs, CFO and COO to build out multiyear budgets that proactively inform long term decision making.
Strategic Support
Pull and prepare financial reports to support grant reporting, grant renewals, and funder requests. This will require deep collaboration with AC’s Development & Partnerships team to understand what is needed from each funder to adequately report out on our impact.
Partner with the CFO and COO to improve and maintain the financial tracking tools used for management decisions (like an updated cashflow and financial dashboard) and keep it current.
Partner with the CFO on budget tracking and cash-flow visibility for management decisions, proactively flagging variances and tradeoffs rather than waiting to be asked. This will require a deep understanding of our various revenue streams, their disbursement timelines and restrictions, and interpreting management reports on accrual basis vs cash basis to ensure accurate projections and raise insights related to liquidity for upcoming periods.
Prepare quarterly financial materials ahead of Finance Committee and Board meetings, so AC leadership can present with minimal last-minute lift. Work closely with the CFO to finalize those reports and develop insights so they are easy for AC leadership to share. Ultimately, serve as a partner to leadership to overlay numbers and strategy that informs decisions and shapes funder and board updates.
Grant Disbursements & Program Finance
Ensure our grantee partners have an excellent experience with our finance processes - from initial grant agreement to receipt of funds. This will be a collaborative effort between Finance and the Programs team (comprising our Portfolio Services team and Grantmaking Systems team).
Review and optimize all grantmaking related finance processes, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness for the current level of scale and in anticipation for future growth.
Manage grant payments to partner organizations (new and existing) - entering grant agreements and payment coding into Ramp (our spend management tool), tracking which grants are ready for disbursement, and preparing payment packages for Co-CEO approval.
Maintain AC's Grant Tracker, keeping historical and active grant/payment data current and accurate.
Ensure grantee partners are set up for payment, including collection and verification of bank details and payment method and cadence.
Accounts Payable & Vendor Management
Ensure AP are processed timely and accurately, meeting varying realities across all geographies, building on a deep understanding of how our expenditure supports our mission and diverse work streams.
Process invoices from outside vendors and consultants from intake through Co-CEO approval and payment.
Help vendors get set up for payment and ensure expense coding aligns with budget.
Collaborate with People & Operations Manager to execute on known payables.
Develop and manage a recurring process for cash disbursements.
Team Compensation & Operations Support
Partner with the People & Operations team to streamline travel and reimbursement policies to meet the full spectrum of needs and realities across departments and geographies.
Process employee expense reimbursements accurately and on schedule.
Partner closely with the People & Operations Manager on HR-related finance activities (like changes to benefits, payroll, 401K, and health insurance payments) to ensure the AC team is well-supported and receiving their full compensation package every month.

Experience in a nonprofit context with an understanding of managing donor funding and/or grantmaking context are an added advantage.

Title & level: Director-level

The Opportunity
African Collaborative has reached an inflection point. We have a strong base of dedicated funders, an active pipeline and a talented team and we are ready to take our fundraising ambition to the next level.
As Director of Development & Partnerships, you will provide the strategic and operational leadership to help us scale. You will shape and execute a fundraising strategy that not only advances our financial goals, but also helps shift how funders see and invest in African-led organizations and their impactful models. You will bring an advocacy lens to our fundraising, building the relationships, ideas and partnerships that move both resources and mindsets.
This is a highly collaborative leadership role. You will be a builder as much as a world-class fundraiser: strengthening the systems, processes and ways of working that allow a growing fundraising function to operate efficiently and effectively. In addition, you will lead and develop a highly functional team, building on its strengths and ensuring the right capabilities are in place for the next stage of our growth.
Our Co-CEOs bring deep relationships, credibility and influence across the field, and so do you. You will work closely with them to strategically leverage their time, energy and relationships helping them make their most valuable contribution to our fundraising goals. You’ll do this while bringing the strategy, structure and follow-through needed to move opportunities forward.
We already have a healthy pipeline and growing portfolio of partnerships. You will bring the strategic thinking, trust-based relationship-building and persistence needed to turn strong prospects into meaningful, long-term partnerships and close opportunities.
This is a unique opportunity to shape equity in global philanthropy and ensure African-led organizations are equipped to deliver change in their communities by steering the next chapter of African Collaborative’s fundraising: strengthening what exists, building what is needed, and creating a fundraising function capable of achieving our 2030 vision.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Fundraising Operations
Steer vision for the fundraising department and own departmental goals, projections, and keep AC management updated on progress.
Serve as a thought partner to the Co-CEOs to translate fundraising strategy and ideas into actionable plans and high quality deliverables.
Lead, build, and grow the fundraising team, and make the calls on how the team should be structured as the organization’s budget doubles from ~$5M/year to ~$10M/year in the next few years, driving towards our $50M goal by 2030.
Manage relationships with contracted fundraising service providers – including scoping their engagements, coordinating deliverables, and integrating their work into the team's overall strategy.
Direct the team to design, improve, and implement the right systems (e.g., CRM, pipeline tracking, reporting cadence) that lets the team operate efficiently and gives leadership visibility.
Build the right mix of in-house staff and outside consultants to ensure the whole Fundraising team is leveraging their unique strengths to achieve maximum impact.
Prospect Strategy & Pipeline Development
Build a framework for evaluating and qualifying major-gift, HNWI, foundation, and institutional prospects, and ensure the team can effectively build a prioritized, well-researched pipeline (especially for targeted events).
Design the strategy and cultivation plan for priority prospects — the strategic thinking behind who to approach, how, and in what sequence — while others on the team execute the outreach itself. You will eventually build capacity and mentor the fundraising and executive support teams to drive relationships forward.
Oversee pipeline cultivation to ensure the highest potential leads are elevated to the Co-CEOs with full research, strategy and preparation needed to move leads towards a commitment.
Design, manage and streamline rigorous and repeatable systems for prospect research and relationship management across the full portfolio of donors.
Guide the strategy and narrative for grant proposals, concept notes, and reports. You’ll be responsible for ensuring the team delivers on high-quality reporting to funders and grant products.
Business Development
Lead business development to diversify and grow the organization's funding base beyond current relationships. You’ll be responsible for representing AC at events and conferences, meeting with new and existing funders, and helping build interest in AC’s work.
Manage a portfolio of funder relationships – both new & existing – and cultivate their commitment and giving to AC’s mission.
Identify and shape AC’s overarching revenue pathways in collaboration with the Co-CEOs - whether that’s through new grant partnership models (e.g., institutional, corporate, multilateral) or earned revenue, focusing on opportunities that drive funding to African-led organizations.
Own the forecasting and reporting against pipeline and revenue targets.
Thought Partnership & Sector Engagement
Stay genuinely well-plugged into the funding sector — interfacing with peer organizations, understanding funder priorities, and having a finger on the pulse of where the field is moving to draw insights that can inform our fundraising & advocacy strategy.
Collaborate with the Advocacy & Strategy team on speaking and writing opportunities so that you can represent the organization externally at sector convenings and events as needed.
What You'll Bring
You have at least 10 years of progressive fundraising/development experience, ideally spanning foundations, major gifts or HNWI cultivation and business development. You have led the effort to secure multi-million dollar grants or gifts and contributed to growing an organization’s annual revenue going from single-digit to double-digit millions (e.g. towards $20M+). Previous experience fundraising for an intermediary or fund is an added advantage.
You have strong strategic thinking capabilities and proven experience translating fundraising goals into actionable plans, setting goals across funding sources, and exercising sound judgment in evaluating prospects. You are also a strong thought partner to leadership.
You have a track record of proactively building and cultivating a strong and sustained pipeline of prospects and opportunities.
You have exceptional project management skills, with a proven ability to keep multiple fundraising workstreams moving simultaneously across different stages, reprioritizing as needed and keeping the organization focused on key priorities.
You bring strong emotional intelligence to fundraising, balancing the science of fundraising with the art of relationship-building. You have a way of building relationships that is focused more on trust, allyship, and strong values alignment rather than just conversion of conversations-to-dollars.
You have successfully built and managed strong fundraising teams, with a clear understanding of the different capabilities and roles needed to drive organizational goals.
You are an effective people manager who can hire, develop and guide a high-performing team, as well as manage external consultants and structure outsourced engagements where needed. You are comfortable building and evolving a fundraising function that is still taking shape.
You have a successful track record of building and overseeing effective fundraising systems, and building the team’s capacity to adopt and use them effectively.
You have strong existing relationships and credibility in the philanthropic sector.
You have exceptional communication skills and world-class responsiveness - both internally and externally.
You are a highly agile individual who is able to navigate a rapidly changing philanthropic environment, adapting strategies and approaches without losing momentum or focus.
You have experience collaborating effectively across timezones while keeping work on track during travel (which will be approximately 20% of your time).
You are excited to contribute to thought leadership through speaking and writing, and comfortable representing the organization externally at relevant sector convenings and events.
You express many (if not all) of AC’s Culture Tenets: 1) Human-centered approach, 2) Mission-aligned, 3) Integrity, 4) Agility and flexibility, 5) Intentional team player, 6) Goal-oriented and proactive, and 7) Next-level contribution.
