In Sanyati District of Zimbabwe, a group of 36 women who had spent their lives working on former commercial farm community found the need to construct a school. Their children were walking more than six kilometres to the nearest school and many girls were facing many challenges on the way including rape and could hardly learn well. Through study circle, the women collaborated through community contributions and constructed Mopani Park primary school for their children. Today, Mopani Park Primary School enrols 595 children, and it belongs to the community that raised it. When communities own the process of development like this, this is how Africa Book Development Organization understands its work: as a process that starts with what a community already knows about itself. That process began in 1995, when Talent Nyathi and Doris Lessing started bringing books and reading materials to women on Zimbabwean farms, creating space for them to gather and name what was affecting their lives. The school in Sanyati is one of dozens of such stories.
Working in rural Zimbabwe, ABDO builds self-sustaining food systems through livelihood projects including market gardening, poultry, piggery, and fishery that generate income for vulnerable communities while addressing poverty and building climate resilience. The organization also runs Girls for Girls programs, life skills training, and GBV awareness campaigns, and has constructed seven schools that integrate academic learning with practical livelihood and leadership skills.
